About SNRM Africa

Africa’s natural resources are among the most abundant in the world — yet they also face some of the highest rates of degradation and mismanagement. Timely data collection, advanced analysis (including modeling techniques), and the effective dissemination of scientific information are critical to designing and implementing interventions that promote sustainable resource management.

At the heart of meaningful change is investment in the next generation of scientists. We believe that empowering young researchers with the skills, tools, and networks they need is essential for securing Africa’s natural heritage for future generations.

The SNRM Summer School was founded to build a critical mass of skilled and competent young natural resource scientists across the continent. Our primary objective is to nurture and mentor emerging leaders through hands-on training and global collaboration.

Each year, we select approximately 25 passionate MSc and early PhD students who are actively involved in data collection and monitoring in fields such as agriculture, forestry, water management, wildlife conservation, and climate change adaptation. While these young scientists demonstrate deep commitment to natural resource management, many have limited technical expertise in data handling and applying insights to inform policy and practice.

Through an intensive two-week program, participants develop key competencies in data management, modeling, analysis, and scientific communication. Beyond technical training, the Summer School offers a unique platform to build lasting networks with peers and senior faculty from Africa and around the world, fostering partnerships that will support their professional growth and collaborative research efforts in the years to come.

Together, we are investing in Africa’s future stewards of natural resources, and equipping them to make informed, impactful contributions to sustainability and conservation across the continent.
